Green School Initative

The Green Committee have worked diligently throughout the year in a concerted effort to improve the school environment. They have achieved much during the year. The following are their main efforts/achievements:
Throughout the year, the 1st and 2nd years have done great work with the litter picking as well as emptying the classroom green bins on a weekly basis. Well done lads!
New blue bins are now in use for organic waste as well as the red and green ones to which we are now well accustomed.
1-K, 1-F and 2-A took part in a poster campaign to let people know which waste goes in each particular bin.
New trees were received as part of National Tree Week (March 3rd to March 10th). They have been planted at the front of the school in an effort to screen the river where rubbish tends to gather.
The first Green Flag Newsletter was produced and is available in all classrooms and on the schools web page.
At the committee meeting on March 5th it was decided to organise the following events :
A visit by the local litter warden
Class visits to clarify what belongs in each of the coloured bins
TY to clean up the area behind the prefabs as part of the National Spring Clean in April.
A green policy to be devised and subsequently adopted by the whole school community.
Perhaps the most visually obvious piece of work is the mural painted by the students on the school wall. It encourages students to bin their waste in a very positive and student friendly style. The mural was both designed and painted by the students themselves under the supervision of Ms Hand and Ms McCann.
Finally, the committee continues to enforce the chewing gum ban. There has been a huge improvement thus far. It would be nice to see it obliterated entirely.
A huge ‘Thank You’ is in order to everyone who is making an effort to improve the school. Spot prizes will be awarded to those people who are seen to make an extraordinary effort.
Please approach the Green Committee next year if you have any suggestions to make to them about how we may best become an eco-friendly school.
Any extra volunteers would be greatly appreciated for next year’s committee!
